What Is BERT?

BERT is a breakthrough model created by Google that revolutionized how AI understands text. Unlike older models that read text in one direction (left to right or right to left), BERT reads bidirectionally—analyzing the context around each word from both directions simultaneously. This bidirectional approach leads to much deeper understanding of language nuances.

BERT is pre-trained on massive amounts of text data using two self-supervised learning objectives: predicting masked words and predicting if one sentence follows another. This pre-training gives BERT strong foundational understanding of language that can be fine-tuned for specific downstream tasks with relatively small amounts of labeled data.

BERT is particularly strong at tasks like text classification, named entity recognition, semantic similarity, and question answering. It's widely used in search engines, chatbots, and applications requiring accurate text understanding. While BERT doesn't generate new text like GPT, its understanding capabilities are exceptional.
