What Is GPT?

GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, a class of AI models created by OpenAI. These models are trained on vast amounts of text data to understand and generate human language. The most well-known versions include GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, each with increasing capabilities in reasoning, accuracy, and complexity.

The "generative" aspect means the model can create new content rather than just classify or analyze existing data. The "pre-trained" part refers to the extensive training process on diverse internet text before fine-tuning for specific tasks. The "transformer" architecture is the underlying neural network design that allows the model to process and relate distant words in a sequence effectively.

GPT models are versatile and can handle numerous tasks: writing essays, answering questions, translating languages, debugging code, and creative content generation. They work through prediction—given a prompt, the model predicts the most likely next word, then the next, generating coherent text token by token.
