What Is Product-Market Fit?

Product-market fit is that magical moment when everything clicks: customers love your product, keep using it, and recommend it to others. It's measured by retention rates (customers sticking with the product), churn (low customer loss), net promoter scores (customers enthusiastically recommending it), and growth (strong acquisition momentum).

Finding product-market fit requires deep understanding of customer problems. You build, measure, learn, and iterate. Many startups optimize prematurely or over-engineer before finding product-market fit. Lean methodology emphasizes getting to product-market fit quickly with MVP (Minimum Viable Product), learning from real customers, and iterating rapidly.

Product-market fit is the foundation for scaling. Before scaling sales, marketing, or hiring, you must have product-market fit—otherwise you're just accelerating toward failure. Conversely, once you have clear product-market fit, growth becomes much easier: customers pull the product from you, acquisition costs are low, and retention is strong.
