What Is AI Orchestration?

AI orchestration is the practice of coordinating multiple AI components—models, agents, tools, and workflows—to work together as a coherent system. As AI applications become more complex, simply chaining model calls isn't sufficient. You need to route requests intelligently, manage parallel execution, handle errors, and coordinate across components.

Orchestration frameworks like LangChain and CrewAI provide abstractions for common patterns: routing (deciding which agent should handle a request), sequencing (determining the order of operations), parallelization (running multiple operations simultaneously), and error handling (gracefully managing failures and retries). Good orchestration makes complex systems understandable and maintainable.

AI orchestration is critical for scalable AI systems. Without proper orchestration, adding new agents, models, or workflows becomes fragile. With orchestration, you can compose sophisticated systems from simple, reusable components. Orchestration decisions significantly affect performance, cost, latency, and reliability.
