What Is Deep Learning?

Deep learning is a powerful approach within machine learning that uses neural networks with multiple hidden layers (hence "deep"). Each layer learns to recognize different levels of abstraction: early layers might detect simple features like edges in images, while deeper layers combine these to recognize complex objects like faces or animals.

The "deep" architecture allows models to learn hierarchical representations—understanding that simple pieces combine into more complex concepts. This hierarchical learning is particularly powerful for unstructured data like images, audio, and text. Deep learning has driven recent breakthroughs in computer vision, natural language processing, and game-playing AI.

Deep learning requires significant computational resources for training, which is why GPUs and specialized hardware are essential. However, once trained, deep learning models can be deployed efficiently. Modern deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch make building and training these models accessible to developers.
