What Is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is the science of creating systems that improve their performance on a task through experience rather than following pre-written rules. Instead of a programmer writing instructions for every possible scenario, a machine learning model learns from examples—the more examples, the better it typically performs.

Machine learning powers many everyday technologies: email spam filters learn which messages are spam, recommendation systems learn what products you'll like, and fraud detection systems learn patterns of fraudulent transactions. The approach is flexible and powerful because the model adapts to new data over time.

Machine learning comes in several flavors: supervised learning (learning from labeled examples), unsupervised learning (finding patterns without labels), and reinforcement learning (learning through rewards). Each approach suits different problems. The field has evolved from simple linear models to complex deep neural networks.
