Temperature is a simple but powerful parameter that shapes AI behavior. It controls how much randomness the model introduces when choosing the next word. At temperature 0 (deterministic), the model always chooses the highest-probability word, producing identical outputs for the same prompt. Higher temperatures introduce more randomness, making responses more creative and unpredictable.
For tasks requiring accuracy and consistency—like customer support, technical documentation, or code generation—lower temperatures (0.3-0.5) are ideal. For creative tasks like content writing, brainstorming, or artistic work—higher temperatures (0.7-1.2) produce more interesting, varied outputs. Very high temperatures (above 1.5) can produce nonsensical results.
Temperature interacts with other parameters like top-k and top-p sampling to further refine output behavior. Understanding temperature allows you to fine-tune models for your specific use case: reliable for critical systems, creative for brainstorming, somewhere in between for balanced performance.
Groovy Web calibrates temperature settings for different agent roles in our multi-agent systems: low for critical decision-making agents, higher for creative content agents. We guide clients through temperature tuning for optimal model behavior.
